Western music history and musicians

The 34th "Renee Descartes"

Minami Aso Luna Observatory · Atelier of the Forest Takashi Miyamoto 2018.03.11

René Descartes (1596 - 1650) is a French philosopher and mathematician.

The well-known proposition "I think, therefore, I have" is one of the most famous propositions in the history of philosophy. Descartes will first take doubts on everything in order to know what is the truth in its work "Method Introductory". And finally, even if everything in the world is a fake world like a dream or vision, if there is no one who recognizes it, even a false world does not exist, so the existence of myself is suspicious I concluded that there was no such thing. This became the beginning of modern philosophy.

Then, why Descartes appears in the history of Western music is actually the first book he wrote at the age of 22 was 'music requirement' with music the theme.

Looking back on the history of Western music, in the Middle Ages, when the music which tried to reproduce the world of harmony of the heavens above Greece on the ground finally enters the Renaissance, it begins to sing human pleasure. Forbidden the joy of sensation, I turned 180 degrees so that the music that I have been supposed to be mathematical academic has been aimed at bringing sweet and pleasing joy to the human sense. Music was not an abstract world law, but a concrete human sense world.

And when Descartes is living in the Baroque era, what is myself who enjoys the music, what is "me" will be more sharpened. Until then, there was the whole world as a whole, there was a man who kneeled down to the mystical law of harmony (ie music), but according to Descartes, now the world is without this "myself" There was no music and music ceased to exist. It was that the purpose of music became human himself.

So, what is this "me" that will make music exist?

That is the sense and passion that recognizes the music as sweet and pleasant is "I", it is to work on "I", and that which causes such feeling and passion is music.

Descartes clearly declares in "Music Requirements" that "the purpose of music gives us pleasure and it is in bringing in various emotions within us". From here, music leads to an artistic view of the day that it is a representation of one's inner face.

Descartes who was a mathematician, on the other hand, arguably argues the comfort and discomfort of chords and dissonance, as it is based on a mathematical proportion that gives a pleasant lusciousness to human feeling, and astronomy and music at medieval university I have taken over the flow that was regarded as a kind of mathematics to this book. Moreover, it seems that it did not actually perform the activity by oneself, so maybe it is not a music artist in today's meaning. However, Descartes' eyes, which gained insight into its essence in the spirit of the times, was also looking into the baroque music of those days, the principle of modern science evolution.

Today it is forgotten that this "music requirement" is stated in Ruso's "music dictionary" and music science literature as a standard until the 18 century.
